Trichinosis – Russia

Russian officials report Thursday that 10 people from Altai Republic, near the Mongolian border, were hospitalized with trichinosis after consuming undercooked bear cub.

Diphtheria – Vietnam

In a follow-up on the diphtheria outbreak in Central Highlands province, the Vietnamese Ministry of Health is reporting 68 cases in the Central Highlands region.

Dengue Fever/Chikungunya – Thailand

In a follow-up on the chikungunya situation in Thailand, health officials now report 4,040 cases in 58 provinces through July 6.

In addition, the Bureau of Epidemiology is now reporting 25,708 total dengue fever cases in all 77 provinces. Of this total, 7645 are dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) cases and 212 are dengue shock syndrome (DSS) cases. 15 deaths have been reported.

Dengue Fever – Singapore

Singapore environmental officials are on the verge of reporting more than 1000 dengue fever cases for the fifth week in a row, as the numbers continue to mount in the city-state. Between July 5 to 8, 887 cases have been reported, sure to surpass 1000 today. The total dengue case count as of now is 16,157.

Ebola – DR Congo

Since our last report on the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Equateur province, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Friday, the number of total cases has risen from 34 to 41.

West Nile Virus – Florida, USA

Four additional human cases of West Nile virus infection of local transmission have been confirmed in Miami-Dade residents. There has been a total of eighteen West Nile virus infections in 2020.

MERS coronavirus update

Global health officials have reported 61 Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) cases since the beginning of the year. The cases have been reported in Saudi Arabia (57), United Arab Emirates (2) and Qatar (1). Riyadh accounted for 25 of Saudi Arabia’s cases. 20 deaths have been reported in Saudi Arabia.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever – Bulgaria

Officials with the Bulgarian National Centre for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases reported a Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) case during the week of June 7. This is the first case of CCHF of 2020 in Bulgaria.

Eastern equine encephalitis – Massachusetts, USA

Massachusetts state health officials reported Friday that eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus has been detected in mosquitoes in Massachusetts for the first time this year.

Diphtheria – Vietnam

Health officials in Kon Tum Province in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam are reporting 12 diphtheria cases since early June. At least one death has been reported in a nine-year-old girl from Đắk G’long District.

Diphtheria – Haiti

Haitian health officials have reported 20 confirmed diphtheria cases, including 4 deaths through the end of April this year.

Malaria/Plague – Madagascar

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that the number of malaria cases in the island country has risen in 2020 compared to 2019 numbers. Since the beginning of the year, malaria cases have increased with 663,558 cases recorded since January, including 398 deaths; compared to 402,385 cases in 2019 during the same period.

In some better news, after reporting huge numbers of measles cases in 2018 into 2019, measles cases have decreased with only 34 cases reported since January 2020. This is thanks to increased vaccination and surveillance efforts.

Wild Poliovirus – Afghanistan

The number of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases reported in Afghanistan has risen to 26 after officials reported seven new cases during the past week.

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) – Saudi Arabia

Between 1 April and 31 May 2020, the National IHR Focal Point of Saudi Arabia reported nine new cases of MERS-CoV infection, including five deaths.

Ebola – DR Congo

The Ministère de la Santé in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported two additional Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) cases Monday, bringing the outbreak total in Mbandaka, Équateur Province to 30-(27 confirmed & 3 probable), with 13 associated deaths.

Dengue Fever – Costa Rica

Through the first week of June, Costa Rica health officials have recorded 3,729 total dengue fever cases. This compares with 1,564 cases during the same period in 2019.

Malaria – Yemen

Yemeni medical officials reported 250,000 malaria cases during the past six months, This is the latest infectious disease outbreak facing the war torn country with a crumbling health infrastructure.

Ebola – DR Congo

Four more cases have been reported from the Equator Province. Total cases in the latest outbreak are 28 cases (25 confirmed & 3 probable), with 13 associated deaths & 2 recoveries.

New swine flu found in China has pandemic potential

Researchers in China have discovered a new type of swine flu that is capable of triggering a pandemic, according to a study published on Monday in the US science journal PNAS. Named G4, it is genetically descended from the H1N1 strain that caused a pandemic in 2009. It possesses “all the essential hallmarks of being highly adapted to infect humans,” say the authors.
