The World Health Organization no longer considers COVID-19 a public health emergency of international concern and has brought an end to an emergency declaration that has been in place since January 2020.

Lassa fever – Ghana

Health Service announced this week the end of the Lassa fever outbreak which began in February. On Friday, 24 February 2023, the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate was notified of two confirmed cases of Lassa fever at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. No new case has been recorded since the 1st of March, 2023. A total of 27 confirmed cases of Lassa fever and one death (CFR: 3 %) were reported.

Leptospirosis – Philippines

Health officials in the Philippines reports a 135 percent increase in leptospirosis cases year to date, according to the latest data from the Epidemiology Bureau. From January 1 to April 8, 1,152 leptospirosis cases have been reported nationally, up from 490 cases during the same period last year. 15 of the country’s 17 regions. More than 100 deaths have been recorded.

Bird Flu in Humans – Chile

The Ministry of Health reports the first case of bird flu in humans in Chile, reported in northern Chile. The individual is a 53-year-old man affected by a severe influenza case. He is currently stable.

Covid-19 – Brazil

Three years after the first case of Covid-19 registered in the country, Brazil reached another sad milestone this Tuesday, March 28: 700,000 deaths caused by the disease.

Johns Hopkins University has stopped collecting Covid-19 data as at 10 March 2023. This will accordingly be the final of the regular covid-19 updates.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease – Philippines

The Iloilo Provincial Health Office Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (PHO-PESU) recently reported that all 2,407 cases of the HFMD from Jan. 1 to Feb. 25 are tagged as recovered.

Rabies – Philippines

The Philippines Department of Health’s Epidemiology Bureau reports 55 human rabies cases/deaths through February 25 this year. This is a 8 percent increase in cases/deaths compared to the same period in 2022 (51). Only three of the 17 regions in the country have not reported a rabies case this year to date.

Monkeypox – Mexico

The Mexico Ministry of Health reports that, in the last 14 days, a total of 74 probable cases and 51 confirmed cases of mpox or monkeypox have been identified in the country.

Covid-19 – New York City

Wild rats in the New York City sewer system and elsewhere in the city have tested positive for Covid-19 Alpha, Delta and Omicron variants.

Syphilis – Mississippi, USA

According to the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH), in the last several years, Mississippi has experienced sharp increases in the number of reported cases of primary and secondary syphilis. Between 2016 and 2020, reported primary and secondary syphilis cases rose by more than 125%, to 741 cases and a rate of 24.9 cases per 100,000 population in 2020, one of the highest rates among US states.

Nipah Virus – Bangladesh

Health authorities in Bangladesh have reported three additional Nipah virus cases, including two additional deaths, according to a recent report. This is up from 11 cases and 8 deaths reported a little over two weeks ago.

Cholera – Syria

Two people have died due to an outbreak of cholera in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria on February 6. There were 568 people infected with cholera as a result of the destruction of infrastructure, water and sewage lines after the earthquake.

Rabies – Malaysia

A total of six rabies outbreak cases were reported in Sarawak with four deaths recorded from January to March this year. The fatalities were reported in four different districts, namely Sibu, Kanowit, Siburan and Bintulu. Two patients were successfully saved after medical intervention.

Cholera – Mozambique

Mozambique today kicked off a cholera vaccination campaign targeting around 720,000 people in eight districts as the country steps up control measures against an outbreak in which 5260 cases and 37 deaths have been recorded to date since September 2022. People aged one year and older will be vaccinated in the five-day campaign.

Zika virus – Hungary

Two imported Zika virus infections were confirmed by the National Center for Public Health in Budapest. The two infected persons had previously been to Thailand, and they survived the infection with mild symptoms.-

Dengue, chikungunya and Zika – Minas Gerais, Brazil

Through February 27, health authorities in Minas Gerais state report 50,101 probable cases (notified cases except discarded cases) of dengue. Of this total, 13,802 cases were confirmed for the disease. There are four confirmed deaths from dengue in Minas Gerais and 21 deaths under investigation.

With regard to Chikungunya fever, 18,371 probable cases of the disease were registered, of which 4,536 were confirmed. So far, there is no confirmed death from Chikungunya in Minas Gerais and one is under investigation.

As for the Zika virus, 72 probable cases have been registered so far. There is one confirmed case of the disease and there are no deaths from Zika in Minas Gerais, so far.

Dengue Fever – Bolivia

The Bolivia Ministry of Health and Sports reports 419 additional dengue fever cases today, bringing the outbreak total to 9,328.

Bird Flu – Cambodia

The Cambodia Ministry of Health reports that an 11-year-old in Roleang village, Prey Veng province has died after contracting H5N1 avian influenza, the first case in Cambodia in nine years (March 14, 2014). Today, the Ministry of Health’s emergency response team has found 12 more people infected with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A(H5N1) in Prey Veng province.

Lassa fever – Nigeria

In a follow-up on the Lassa fever situation in Nigeria in 2023, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) report an additional 68 confirmed cases during the week ending February 12. This brings the total confirmed cases to 531 during the first six weeks of 2023.

Leishmaniasis – Paraguay

So far in 2023, 13 confirmed cases have been recorded, nine of the visceral type and four integumentary. The people affected come from seven departments across the country.

Avian Flu – Argentina, Uruguay – First Cases

Uruguay officials report the country’s first highly pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5) virus case in a black-necked swan in Laguna Garzón, between the departments of Maldonado and Rocha.

Argentina reported the first detection in the country of avian influenza (AI) H5 in wild birds in the Pozuelos lagoon, northwest of the province of Jujuy, near the border with Bolivia.

Dengue Fever – Bolivia

The Bolivia Ministry of Health and Sports reported 579 new dengue fever cases, bringing the cumulative total to 6,453.

Dengue Fever – Thailand

Thai health authorities are advising the public to guard against dengue fever as the case tally rises to 3,855 total cases were reported from 72 provinces from the beginning of the year through February 7. One fatality was report to date.

Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease – Philippines

The Negros Occidental Provincial Health Office in Bacolod City reports an increase in hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases early in 2023. According to official data, 320 cases have already been recorded from January 1 to February 4, 2023. This compares with only five cases reported in the first five weeks last year.

Marburg Virus – Equatorial Guinea

In a follow-up on the unknown deaths reported in Equatorial Guinea, the Ministry of Health now reports confirming its first-ever outbreak of Marburg virus disease (MVD). The World Health Organization reports preliminary tests carried out following the deaths of at least nine people in the country’s western Kie Ntem Province turned out positive for the disease.

Cholera – Africa (Malawi)

Between 1-29 January this year, an alarming 26 000 cases and 660 deaths were reported in 10 African countries, which represents 30% of last year’s caseload. A record 80 000 cases and 1 863 fatalities, from 15 impacted nations, were reported last year. The majority of the newly reported cases and fatalities are from Malawi, which is experiencing its worst cholera outbreak in 20 years. That country’s president last week said the cholera cases were primarily because of climate change-induced floods. All the 29 districts of Malawi have been affected by cholera and cumulatively, as of 8 February, 40 284 cases have recorded with 1 316 deaths. On average, daily, Malawi is recording just over 500 cases. The majority, who are succumbing to cholera, were people aged above 50, while those affected were in the range of 10-59 years.

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) – Oman

The World Health Organization reports the Oman IHR-NFP notified them of a case of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) on January 5. The 60 year old male had no history of physical contact with dromedaries, goats, sheep or contact with camel products, milk, or urine. Since the first MERS case in Oman in 2013, Oman has reported 26 cases of MERS-CoV including seven deaths (CFR 27%).

Dengue Fever – Bolivia

The Bolivia Ministry of Health and Sports reported 281 new dengue fever cases, bringing the cumulative total to 4,230. Santa Cruz department reports 3,085 cases, the most in the country. 17 total dengue related deaths have been reported.

Dengue Fever – Bolivia

Bolivian health officials reported that the number of dengue fever cases in 2023 eclipsed the 3,000 mark on February 2. As of February 4, officials put the cumulative total of the mosquito-borne viral disease at 3,437, including 13 deaths.

Chikungunya – Paraguay

Chikungunya cases continue rise, Most in the Asunción metropolitan area. In the three epidemiological weeks evaluated (EW2, EW3, EW4) this year, a total of 8,442 cases of chikungunya and 80 of dengue were recorded.

Lassa fever – Nigeria

During the first three weeks on 2023, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported a total of 244 confirmed cases with 37 deaths and a case fatality rate of 15.1 % from 16 states.

Diphtheria – Nigeria

In a follow-up on the diphtheria outbreak in Nigeria, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reports 111 confirmed cases since last May 2022, with 89 of the cases reported in 2023. The majority (91.9%) of the confirmed cases occurred in those aged 2 – 14 years.
