Thailand, Update – Thirty-six people are confirmed dead and one is still missing in the floods that have hit 12 southern provinces since Jan 1, with devastated communities in many areas struggling to repair damage so they can resume their lives. The floods have taken their toll on 1.2 million people of 403,478 households in 5,244 villages in 119 districts of the 12 provinces, causing damage to 17 government installations and 592 roads, 106 bridges, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department chief Chatchai Promlert said on Thursday. The situation has eased in four provinces: Yala, Ranong, Pattani and Narathiwat. Flooding lingers in Phatthalung, Songkhla, Trang, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Chumphon, Krabi and Prachuap Khiri Khan.

Tornado Outbreaks

Large-scale tornado outbreaks that last one to three days with six or more twisters in close succession have nearly doubled in occurrence over the past 50 years, according to a new report.

Computer models had suggested that a warming climate would create such an increase in severe storms.

But researchers, led by Joel E. Cohen at the University of Chicago, found that amplification of vertical wind shear within storms, not yet predicted to increase due to climate change, is creating the extreme outbreaks.

“Either the recent increases are not due to a warming climate, or a warming climate has implications for tornado activity that we don’t understand,” said researcher Michael K. Tippett.

Lack of Tornadoes in USA – The trend of the low number of tornado reports this year in the U.S. has continued through late November. No tornadoes had developed in the U.S. this month through Nov. 21. In fact, the last tornado that occurred prior to that date was on Oct. 14, when two tornadoes were reported in Oregon. However, the streak came to an end on Nov. 22 when one tornado was reported nine miles west-northwest of Manhattan Airport in Riley County, Kansas. An airline pilot reported that a weak funnel contacted the ground for less than two miles, but there was no visible debris or damage. There were four more tornado reports Nov. 27 in southern Nebraska, all brief touchdowns, bringing November’s tornado count to five. Some damage was reported from a tornado near Red Cloud, Nebraska, according to the Storm Prediction Centre.

Freak Waves – In Hawaii, a pair of gigantic, back-to-back swells generated waves large enough to overtake beach parks, wash across roadways and damage oceanfront properties. In an unprecedented move, state officials shut down a 12-mile stretch of Kamehameha Highway, on the north shore of Oahu, in response to ocean surges that washed over the roadway. In addition to flooding, several areas experienced severe coastal erosion. A 30-foot stretch of beach on the north shore of Oahu reportedly disappeared overnight. Despite numerous beaches being closed, lifeguards were kept busy, rescuing dozens of people and issuing hundreds of warnings. In Los Angeles a large wave swept four people off a Los Angeles County jetty as high surf pounded much of the California coast, leaving one man dead and his three companions seriously injured.

Fiji – The death toll in Fiji has jumped to 42 amid fears for remote areas and islands yet to be reached by relief teams, days after a devastating cyclone. Cyclone Winston, thought to be one of the strongest storms to hit the Southern Hemisphere, left 8,500 sheltering in evacuation centres. Teams are still being deployed. Officials said they met “grim images of devastation” on reaching Koro island. The Red Cross has warned that the toll could still rise further. The powerful cyclone, which struck last weekend, brought winds of over 320km/h (200mph), torrential rain and waves of up to 12m (40ft), flattening many buildings in parts of the main Viti Levu island and Koro islands. It has been described by the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation as the worst to ever hit the country. The damage in remote outlying areas – so far seen only from the air – is reported to be especially bad. Pictures taken from Koro on Tuesday showed battered and demolished homes on the island. Communication with many smaller and remote islands in the Pacific nation of 900,000 people have been down since the cyclone hit.

Britain – ‘Blood rain’ falls on Britain as red Saharan dust blows in from Africa. Storms in the Sahara desert have whipped up sand into a fine dust which is being carried to Britain on northerly winds. When the rain falls it looks a reddish colour and when it dries it leaves a thin layer of dust capable of coating houses, cars and garden furniture. Although it is more common in Spain and the South of France, it has been known to travel longer distances and fall in areas like Scandinavia. In some parts of India the colour has been vibrant enough to stain clothing. In ancient times ‘blood rain’ was believed to be actual blood and considered a bad omen, heralding death and destruction. It is mentioned in Homer’s Iliad and in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s tales of King Arthur.

Cyclone Creates New Coral Sea Islands

A string of six brand-new islands emerged in the Coral Sea after Cyclone Nathan churned its tropical waters for nearly two weeks in March.

Located about 125 miles offshore from the Queensland resort of Cairns, the islands were forged out of the fury of Nathan in an area known as Holmes Reef.

The coral cays were discovered by a group of visitors to the pristine marine reserve three days after the cyclone passed.

“There’s definitely more islands there. The cyclone would have driven a massive northwest swell that lifted the sand and coral rubble up above the surface,” boat captain Trevor Jackson told The Guardian’s James Woodford.
