Tornado Outbreaks

Large-scale tornado outbreaks that last one to three days with six or more twisters in close succession have nearly doubled in occurrence over the past 50 years, according to a new report.

Computer models had suggested that a warming climate would create such an increase in severe storms.

But researchers, led by Joel E. Cohen at the University of Chicago, found that amplification of vertical wind shear within storms, not yet predicted to increase due to climate change, is creating the extreme outbreaks.

“Either the recent increases are not due to a warming climate, or a warming climate has implications for tornado activity that we don’t understand,” said researcher Michael K. Tippett.

However, the streak came to an end on Nov. 22 when one tornado was reported nine miles west-northwest of Manhattan Airport in Riley County, Kansas. An airline pilot reported that a weak funnel contacted the ground for less than two miles, but there was no visible debris or damage. There were four more tornado reports Nov. 27 in southern Nebraska, all brief touchdowns, bringing November’s tornado count to five. Cyclone Winston, thought to be one of the strongest storms to hit the Southern Hemisphere, left 8,500 sheltering in evacuation centres. Teams are still being deployed. It has been described by the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation as the worst to ever hit the country. The damage in remote outlying areas – so far seen only from the air – is reported to be especially bad. Pictures taken from Koro on Tuesday showed battered and demolished homes on the island.
