Texas, USA – Heavy rain and flooding forced schools to close in the Houston area Friday after an overnight deluge swamped the nation’s 4th-largest city. The sodden city was at the epicenter of a sprawling storm system that brought soaking rain to much of Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. In all, some 21 million people live where flooding is possible Friday and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. The rains stem from a cold front in the western Gulf that is setting up a multi-day period of heavy, excessive rainfall.

Indonesia – The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said on Thursday that a tropical cyclone emerging from the Banda Sea in Maluku, called Lili, hit several villages hard in the form of severe rain and strong wind. Water as deep as 1.5 meters on average had reportedly inundated three villages in three separate districts in the province: Laitutun village in Letti Island district, Tounwawan in Moa Lakor and Luang Timur in Mdona Hiera. No casualties were reported in the disaster, but scores of houses and a number of public facilities were damaged. TC Lili has since dissipated, but the system is still expected to bring further rain to the area.

USA – Severe storms and tornadoes roared across the South on Tuesday while heavy rain led to flash flooding in the Midwest. As of late Tuesday, there had been at least seven reports of tornadoes, with damage reported in Agra, Oklahoma, the Storm Prediction Center said. No deaths or injuries had been immediately reported. Heavy rain in Davenport, Iowa, led a breech of a levee, flooding part of the downtown area. The National Weather Service had issued flood warnings for areas directly on either side of the river in 10 states, from Minnesota and Wisconsin south to Louisiana and Mississippi.

Indonesia – Update – Landslides and floods triggered by torrential rain have killed at least 29 people in Indonesia, with thousands taking shelter in evacuation centres amid fears of disease. More than a dozen people were missing after the rain hit the province of Bengkulu, on the southwest side of Sumatra, on Friday and Saturday. Hundreds of buildings have been damaged, along with roads and bridges, with two districts cut off by landslides, and the floodwater had subsided in some places. Displaced villagers needed tents, boats, food and water, while heavy equipment was also needed to build temporary bridges.

Mozambique – Tens of thousands of people in the far north of Mozambique are bracing for violent flooding as torrential rain pushes up water levels, after the death and devastation wrought by Cyclone Kenneth. The first floods have already been seen in some parts of Pemba, the capital of Cabo Delgado province, as well as in surrounding areas, lashed by heavy rain since daybreak. Fields on the outskirts of the city that had been lush green just a day earlier were now brown with floodwater. According to a preliminary toll published Sunday by the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC), five people have died, more than 23,000 people are without shelter and nearly 35,000 homes have been either partly or completely destroyed.

Canada – Over 6,500 people were told to quickly leave their homes near Montreal over the weekend after floodwaters breached a dike in rain-soaked eastern Canada. According to the latest government data, nearly 8,000 people have been forced from their homes in Quebec – more than in 2017, during what was then the area’s worst flooding in half a century. The barrier protecting Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac, just west of Montreal, gave way last Saturday night, causing a surge of water of up to 1.5m to crash through the area. Hundreds of policemen, firefighters and soldiers helped evacuate nearly 2,600 homes in the area, a provincial police spokesman said.

The waters have receded in some places but officials warned the full extent of the damage was not yet known and some areas were still cut off.
