Turkey – A mass clean up operation is underway after heavy rainfall caused parts of Ankara to flood. Roads turned into rivers as rain came down on the Turkish capital city. Dramatic footage showed people standing on top of their vehicles waiting for help. The flood waters damaged local shops causing severe damage. Firefighters have been helping the operation to save people stuck in the floods and clean up the city.

Turkey – A torrential flood has swept through a district in the Turkish capital of Ankara, sending vehicles downstream and damaging local businesses. The rain was expected to last for three hours on Saturday afternoon (local time), but instead came down in nine minutes, causing flooding in Ankara’s Mamak district. One man is reported to have drowned, with at least four injured.

Ethiopia – Flash Floods – April 2018 – Reported flash flood incidences since the second week of April have left hundreds of thousands of people in need of immediate humanitarian support in Afar (Awsi), Oromia (Arsi, East Shewa, East and West Hararge zones) and Somali (7 zones) regions. Areas affected by recurring floods have been advocating for enhanced flood early warning, mitigation and preparedness mechanisms. In Somali region, more than 27,000 flood-affected households (165,000 persons) need urgent food, water, health services and NFI support. Overflow of Genale and Wabi Shebelle rivers and related tributaries due to recent heavy rains in the Somali region and the highlands of Oromia has affected more than 83 kebeles in 19 woredas (districts) of Afder, Fafan, Liben, Nogob, Siti, Shebele and warder Zones. Several Kebeles are submerged and farmlands are either flooded or washed away at flowering stage. Many people’s houses/shelters and livestock have reportedly been washed away, leaving people displaced and homeless.

Turkey – The heavy rains and flooding that have hit Turkey’s southern province of Hatay since April 20 have made their way to the historic Long Bazaar in Turkey’s south. The rain, which fell for about an hour on the night of April 21, also stopped daily life in Antakya. Traffic was blocked as cars were seen left halfway underwater. While many cars were damaged in construction sites when buildings collapsed, shops and residences were also severely hit by floods.

Turkey – Two soldiers were saved and two were killed after an armored military personnel vehicle got caught in a flooded river in the Akçakale district of the southeastern Turkish province of Şanlıurfa. The incident took place amid strong winds in the province, which is on the border with Syria.

Ghana – Ghana has been hit by deadly floods in the northern region. Most areas of the regional capital, Tamale got flooded after heavy rains on Tuesday flooded major areas. Local media reported two deaths and the loss of properties.

Philippines – Heavy rains battered parts of the Philippines Thursday, July 27 due to southwest monsoon enhanced by a severe tropical storm. The country’s weather bureau said this year’s seventh cyclone ‘Noru,’ locally known as ‘Gorio,’ has intensified into a severe tropical storm. ‘Gorio’ is not expected to make landfall, but Batanes in northern Luzon is now placed under warning signal number one. Western Luzon has been damped with moderate to occasional heavy rains. The rest of Luzon and parts of the Visayas region have been affected as well. Many roads were impassable due to persisting floods. Floods in some parts of Quezon City are waist-deep. The weather has prompted dozens of cities and provinces to suspend classes in all levels of public and private schools.

Istanbul, Turkey – At least ten people were injured – two of them seriously – when a violent thunderstorm struck Istanbul, bombarding the city with hailstones the size of golf balls and submerging much of the city in knee-deep water. he unforgiving winds, rain and hail appear to have worn away the paint on the Turkish Airline jet’s nose, with cracks visible on the pilots’ window. he plane was forced to make an emergency landing in the Aegean city of Canakkale, around 170 miles flight from Istanbul which endured the worst of the freak storm.

At least two tourists have been killed and around 200 others injured after a powerful earthquake shook the Greek Islands and Turkish coast, triggering a small tsunami.

The 6.7-magnitude quake struck in the Aegean Sea on Thursday night south of the Turkish city of Bodrum and east of the small Greek island of Kos – both areas popular with British holidaymakers.

The earthquake triggered a small tsunami that caused flooding in Bodrum and parts of Kos, which took the brunt of the impact with significant damage to buildings.

Tens of thousands of tourists spent the night outdoors on Kos, many sleeping on sunbeds along beaches and in squares.

A powerful earthquake Monday afternoon killed a woman and damaged buildings on the Greek island of Lesbos. The earthquake, magnitude 6.4, was centered south of Lesbos in the Mediterranean Sea, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Shaking was also detected in nearby Turkey and on the Greek mainland. “Most of the houses in the village of Vrissa … have been badly damaged by the earthquake,” Lesbos Mayor Spyros Galinos wrote. He told local media that it looked like the village had been “flattened by bombs.”
