Somalia – Moderate to heavy rains continued in many parts of Somalia and within the Ethiopian highlands over the last week. River levels at Belet Weyne (Shabelle) are currently very high. Latest reports received in the evening of 21 October indicate that nearly 40 per cent of Belet Weyne town has been affected by flooding with an estimated 72,000 people having moved to Ceel Jaale highlands and surrounding areas. All villages in the north of Belet Weyne town have been affected and humanitarian partners are yet to establish the number of people displaced in these areas.

Texas, USA – A destructive tornado touched down in the northeastern part of Dallas on Sunday night (Oct. 20), knocking out power for more than 150,000 residents and causing significant property damage. Though the tornado cut through a densely populated area, no storm-related deaths have been reported.

India – In less than two months, North Karnataka districts have been hit by heavy rain and floods again. On Monday, the latest spell of torrential rain claimed four lives and two boys were swept away in separate incidents. Flood water inundated agricultural fields and entered houses in several parts of the State.

Texas, USA – Record-breaking rainfall from the tropical storm Imelda is soaking southeastern Texas. Some areas have been swamped with 20 to 42 inches (51 to 107 centimeters) of rain over just three days, causing catastrophic flooding that is among the worst in U.S. history.

Mauritania: Floods – Aug 2019 – From 26 to 27 August 2019, Guidimakha Wilaya (Region), located in southeast Mauritania, witnessed torrential rains exceeding the 200 mm mark in the regional capital city of Sélibaby and which approached 300 mm in other areas of the region. These torrential rains caused heavy human and material damages in all three districts of the Wilaya namely Sélibaby, Ould Yenja and Ghabou. According to the latest information, a total of 4,200 households were affected including 850 homeless households.

Texas, USa – East Texas was facing days of heavy rains and flash flooding Wednesday as Tropical Depression Imelda, downgraded from a tropical storm, still packed a dangerous punch for millions of residents. The storm made landfall Tuesday afternoon near Freeport, 60 miles south of Houston. Imelda, crawling north at about 5 mph. Parts of Houston had seen almost 7 inches, and the storm could drench areas with up to 3 inches of rain per hour, the weather service warned. Flash flood watches were in effect for southeast Texas and extreme southwest Louisiana.

A fire raged out of control on the Spanish holiday island of Gran Canaria Monday, forcing evacuations as flames rose so high even water-dropping planes could not operate in what was dubbed an “environmental tragedy”. The blaze, the third in 10 days in the mountainous centre of the island, has forced the evacuation of several villages with a combined population of 9,000.

Altogether, 1,000 firefighters and other crew and 14 water-dropping helicopters and planes were working on controlling the blaze, which is estimated to have destroyed 10,000 hectares (24,700 acres).

Wildfires – Texs, USA

Firefighters in Texas are battling three wildfires covering more than 17,000 acres across the state.

A fire in Hardeman County near Quanah has burned an estimated 8,830 acres and is 40 percent contained, said the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Another fire in Sutton County has burned over 2,400 acres. The Bird Ranch Fire in Cottle County is estimated to have spread to 7,000 acres and is 25 percent contained.

Wildfires – Alaska

The Alaska Railroad has cancelled passenger service between Anchorage and Denali National Park because of a fire burning along tracks north of Willow. The fire began Saturday when high wind blew a tree onto a powerline at Mile 91 Parks Highway. Continued strong winds Sunday night pushed the fire across the highway and across railroad tracks. Crews are removing numerous burned trees that fell on tracks. The fire by Sunday night had grown to nearly 3 square miles (7.7 sq. kilometers).

Texas, USA – Heavy rain and flooding forced schools to close in the Houston area Friday after an overnight deluge swamped the nation’s 4th-largest city. The sodden city was at the epicenter of a sprawling storm system that brought soaking rain to much of Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. In all, some 21 million people live where flooding is possible Friday and Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. The rains stem from a cold front in the western Gulf that is setting up a multi-day period of heavy, excessive rainfall.

Indonesia – The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said on Thursday that a tropical cyclone emerging from the Banda Sea in Maluku, called Lili, hit several villages hard in the form of severe rain and strong wind. Water as deep as 1.5 meters on average had reportedly inundated three villages in three separate districts in the province: Laitutun village in Letti Island district, Tounwawan in Moa Lakor and Luang Timur in Mdona Hiera. No casualties were reported in the disaster, but scores of houses and a number of public facilities were damaged. TC Lili has since dissipated, but the system is still expected to bring further rain to the area.

Kurdistan – The latest floods caused by yet another bout of rainfall in the Kurdistan Region have resulted in the death of a teen, shut down multiple roads linking cities, and caused substantial damage to a camp for displaced persons and to local infrastructure in several areas. In southern Sulaimani Province, a bridge on a road linking the cities of Kalar and Darbandikhan collapsed, halting all intra-city traffic.

Texas, USA – Harris County Flood Control District officials are keeping a close eye on several Houston area waterways after the Houston area was inundated heavy rain, causing flooding along some creeks and bayous.

Thailand – The downtown of Nakhon Si Thammarat was under water on Wednesday after the southern province was hit by overnight heavy rains. Several areas in the heart of Muang district were flooded as thevolume of rain overwhelmed the drainage system.

Philippines – A 22-year old man was reported missing as thousands of individuals in Eastern Visayas were affected by Tropical Depression ‘Samuel’ on Tuesday. The unidentified missing person was swept away after he reportedly crossed a bulging river in Barangay Paysud, Palapag town on Tuesday morning aboard a motorcycle.

Texas, USA – Once every 100 years. That’s the mark of a major flood. That means homes have a one percent chance of experiencing a flood in any given year. Texas has had three 100-year flood events in five years. Scientists say it’s a sign of the times.

Tunisia – Tunisian authorities say at least five people have been killed in flash floods in the country caused by heavy rains Wednesday and Thursday. Two other people are missing.

The regions of Bizerte in the north, and of Nabeul, about 70 kilometers (45 miles) east of the capital, received up to 200 millimeters (almost 8 inches) of rainfall. Some schools have been closed and homes, roads and hydro-electric power facilities along rivers have been severely damaged.

Texas, USA – Two people have died in flooding in Central Texas that caused a bridge to collapse. Heavy rains led to flooding where the Llano River and the Colorado River meet in Kingsland, Texas. Flood waters rushed over the 2900 bridge for hours before it collapsed.

El Niño Emerging?

The U.S. environment agency NOAA predicts there is now a 70 to 75 percent chance that the weather-altering ocean warming in the Pacific known as El Niño will develop during the next several weeks.

Observations seem to show an ocean-surface warming emerging in the eastern tropical Pacific during the past few weeks off the coast of Ecuador.

The last El Niño triggered crop damage, fires and flash floods in various parts of the world when it occurred from 2015 to 2016.

Nicaragua – A major mopping-up operation is under way in Nicaragua following widespread flooding which left thousands homeless. The government has set up shelters for Nicaraguans who lost their homes and are providing them with food and supplies.

Texas, USA – Rescue crews in boats and helicopters were searching Monday for at least four people missing since flooding from heavy rain washed away a recreational vehicle park in a small West Texas city. In all, at least a dozen RVs were washed away by the flooding. Nineteen other people have been rescued, some by boat and some from the air by helicopter crews. A flood warning is in effect for the Llano River from Llano downstream to Kingsland after torrential rainfall early yesterday morning created a major flood on the river in Junction. A couple dozen people were rescued, and others are reported missing.

Texas, USA – A record-setting rainfall drenched the Dallas-Fort Worth area throughout Friday night, flooding dozens of homes. The heaviest rain was in the southeast and eastern portions of Tarrant County, with a few pockets in the east getting as much as 8 inches of rain, said meteorologist Tom Bradshaw with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. Throughout the rest of the county, widespread rain dropped 3 to 5 inches of water. Heavy rainfall and flash flooding was also reported foreparts of Oklahoma.

East coast, USA – At least 44 people have died since hurricane Florence slammed the coast last week. While the rain has subsided, some rivers are still rising, and North and South Carolina officials warn the flooding danger is far from over.

India – In Uttar Pradesh, heavy rains caused the Ganga to flood and inundate Kanpur, Hapur, Varanasi and Baliya. The floods marooned 153 villages and 805 villages were affected by the floods. Over 2,000 houses and huts were damaged or submerged, and over 1.12 lakh hectares of land were affected. In Varanasi, connectivity between 84 ghats were also affected. Low-lying areas are under water, and boating has temporarily been banned in the region, with authorities issuing a warning. The Central Water Commission said all major rivers are flowing in spate. The Ganga, Ram Ganga, Sharda, Ghaghra and Quano are currently flowing above the danger mark at different places. Rains and floods have affected 23 districts in Uttar Pradesh. Six more people died in rain-related incidents since Thursday night, taking the toll to 82 since 1 September, officials said on Friday.

Texas, USA – A mother and her 2-year-old daughter drowned Saturday after their car was swept off the road and into a culvert that filled with floodwaters. Rescuers also found another man who drowned at 2:30 p.m. when his vehicle became submerged.

Texas, USA – Days of torrential rain have led to widespread flooding in southeastern Texas, the state’s worst floods since Hurricane Harvey last year. Since Tuesday, 5 to 10 inches of rain has fallen along the Texas coast from the border to around 125 miles south of Houston, with more than 15 inches in some areas, the National Weather Service said.

Illinois, USA – Heavy rains have led to some flooding and standing water on roadways across the Chicago area Thursday, especially in the south suburbs, and raised concerns for those living along the area’s rivers. More bands of rain will move through the Chicago area overnight, bringing more rain. That has residents who live along the Fox River concerned.

Texas, USA – Heavy rains along the Texas coast have caused flooding in areas that were hit hard by Hurricane Harvey less than a year ago. Flash flooding was reported in Hidalgo County, already saturated with 4 to 6 inches of rain. Flash flood watches are also in effect for areas south of Houston to Brownsville, at the Mexican border, with flash flood warnings popping up as storms flare.

Firefighters on the ground near Bruderheim, Alta., have been working hard to keep raging wildfire flames away from homes but dry, windy conditions are complicating their efforts after multiple large grassfires ignited Saturday.

Firefighters in the Texas Panhandle are working to contain a wildfire that has blackened more than 69,000 acres. Nearly 300 firefighters are at the blaze, which began last week about 40 miles southeast of Amarillo and not far from Palo Duro Canyon, the Texas A&M Forest Service reported Sunday. The fire was about 15 percent contained Sunday afternoon.
