Bangladesh – Pre-monsoon rains started on 18 April 2018 near Cox’s Bazar on Bangladesh’s southern coast.

Kenya – Six people have drowned in Kenya in overnight flooding and 11 others are missing, local authorities said Friday, the latest of dozens of deaths caused by heavy seasonal rains in recent weeks. Floods from the seasonal rains hit as the East African nation was recovering from a devastating drought last year that affected half of its counties.

Nepal – Heavy rains and hailstones battered the district of Bajhang on Wednesday night, triggering flash floods and landslides. Floods and landslides damaged at least 30 homes and killed more than 40 domesticated animals in different parts of the district. Three people were killed when a landslide buried a passenger jeep at Subeda area in Bajhang district on Wednesday night.

Philippines – The death toll from a tropical storm in the southern Philippines climbed swiftly to 133 on Saturday, as rescuers pulled dozens of bodies from a swollen river, police said. Tropical Storm Tembin has lashed the nation’s second-largest island of Mindanao since Friday, triggering flash floods and mudslides. Rescuers retrieved 36 bodies from the Salog River in Mindanao on Saturday, as officials reported more fatalities in the impoverished Zamboanga peninsula. Tembin struck less than a week after Tropical Storm Kai-Tak left 54 dead and 24 missing in the central Philippines.

Brunei – Powerful rains lashed across the Tutong District, causing flash floods in several areas of the district on Thursday. Heavy rains that began on Tuesday evening and prolonged until midmorning Thursday, damaged several houses in Kampong Kiudang. One of the worst affected residential areas was Jalan Batang Mitus, where according to the Lamunin Fire Station, water reached 0.50 metre high, flooding roads.

Europe – Strong winds battered northern and central Europe on Sunday, killing at least six people in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, with authorities watching for oil leaks from a huge freighter that ran aground in the North Sea. Four victims in Poland and the Czech Republic were killed by falling trees. The storm also knocked out power to thousands of Czechs and Poles, and rail traffic in large parts of northern Germany remained suspended after heavy damage from fallen trees. Winds reached more than 100km/h (60 miles per hour) in several parts of the Czech Republic and topped out at 180km/h on Snezka, at 1,602 metres, the country’s highest mountain. The two victims in Germany included a 63-year-old German man who drowned at a campsite in Lower Saxony as a result of a storm surge, and a woman whose motorboat overturned in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, German media reported.

Malaysia – A Monday afternoon downpour resulted in flash floods in several parts of Kuala Lumpur. Numerous streets and highways were flooded creating huge traffic jams that lasted for hours.

Canada – Record-breaking rainfall in Ottawa on Monday flooded homes and forced Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to take an ATV for part of his commute. At least 175 homes were flooded, according to the city. More than 50 mm of rain fell in just six hours Monday morning, setting a new one-day record, Environment Canada reports.

Sierra Leone, Update – The death toll from devastating floods in Sierra Leone has climbed to more than 400 people with hundreds still missing in the stricken capital. Large-scale burials have begun as an estimated 600 people remain missing. People continue to search through tonnes of mud and debris amid the remains of mangled buildings.

Albania – Albanian authorities have sent army troops and other personnel to help people evacuated because of floods caused by heavy rain. Three deaths have been reported so far. Many roads including the highway between Tirana and western port city of Durres have been blocked. Damaged roads have isolated many rural areas. Two ferries were unable to dock in southwestern city of Vlore, keeping hundreds of passengers aboard. Heavy rain, up to 100 millimetres (4 inches) by midday Tuesday, is forecast to continue into Wednesday.

Vietnam, Update – Over the past weeks, consecutive periods of heavy rainfall have caused severe flooding in various provinces in Central Viet Nam: from 14-16 Oct.1 and from 30 Oct.-5 Nov.2 The most affected provinces are Ha Tinh and Quang Binh for the first flood, and Quang Binh and Phu Yen for the second flood. According to the Central Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control, the impact of the floods is as follows:

Tropical cyclone 14p (Yalo), located approximately 334 nm west-southwest of Papeete, Tahiti, and is tracked southeastward at 08 knots.

Tropical cyclone 11p (Winston), Final advisory has been issued on Tropical cyclone Winston which is located approximately 367 nm northeast of Kingston Island. Winston is already exhibiting signs of being subtropical, with the mid-level warm core weakening and the wind field expanding. The system is forecast to complete subtropical transition, but is expected to maintain gale-force winds.

Fiji – The death toll in Fiji has jumped to 42 amid fears for remote areas and islands yet to be reached by relief teams, days after a devastating cyclone. Cyclone Winston, thought to be one of the strongest storms to hit the Southern Hemisphere, left 8,500 sheltering in evacuation centres. Teams are still being deployed. Officials said they met “grim images of devastation” on reaching Koro island. The Red Cross has warned that the toll could still rise further. The powerful cyclone, which struck last weekend, brought winds of over 320km/h (200mph), torrential rain and waves of up to 12m (40ft), flattening many buildings in parts of the main Viti Levu island and Koro islands. It has been described by the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation as the worst to ever hit the country. The damage in remote outlying areas – so far seen only from the air – is reported to be especially bad. Pictures taken from Koro on Tuesday showed battered and demolished homes on the island. Communication with many smaller and remote islands in the Pacific nation of 900,000 people have been down since the cyclone hit.

Southern USA – Three dead as tornadoes hit southern US – At least 7 tornadoes lashed Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida Tuesday, destroying homes and businesses. The deaths occurred when mobile homes were destroyed in Louisiana and Mississippi, officials said. A powerful storm system swept across the East Coast on Wednesday, killing four people in Virginia and knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes and businesses in the region. A day earlier, the system spawned about two dozen tornadoes along the Gulf Coast, damaging hundreds of homes in Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida. Three people were killed and dozens were injured.

Texas, USA – Last night’s storms have caused flooding, property damage, and numerous power outages leaving thousands of East Texans in the dark. Heavy rains also flooded parts of Forth Worth.

Nepal – At least two persons have gone missing following an avalanche in Humla in west Nepal.

Namibia – Several families in three villages in the Omusati Region have been left in despair following heavy flooding in the area. Villagers have been forced to relocate and saw their crops ruined after floodwaters ravaged their homesteads. The villages are Omuthitu, Okanya and Okaloko in Okahao Constituency. The flooding began last week.

China – Rain-triggered landslide in Yunnan Province of China has claimed the lives of at least nine people.

Sri Lanka – At least six people were killed and about 300 were missing in central Sri Lanka on Wednesday after an early morning landslide set off by heavy monsoon rains. About 150 homes at the Meeriyabedda tea plantation in the district of Badulla, most of them small rooms constructed in a line and attached to one another, were crushed under mud around 7:30 a.m. It had been raining for days in the area, disaster management officials said. Beyond the recovered bodies, many more are believed to be beneath 10 to 15 feet of mud.

Tropical cyclone Lehar is located approximately 215 nm east-northeast of Chennai, India.

The very severe cyclonic storm Lehar weakened to a cyclonic storm Wednesday, as wind speed fell to 90 kmph from 180 kmph, hours before landfall expected on Thursday. It changed direction and may now make landfall as a cyclonic storm between Machilipatnam and Nellore, India.

Winter storm Boreas – Heavy snow piled up Wednesday in parts of the Northeast and Appalachians while rain drenched locations closer to the coast as a winter storm disrupted millions of travellers heading out for Thanksgiving. Nationwide, nearly 475 flights had been canceled and more than 3,600 had been delayed as of late afternoon. Some of the worst delays were at Philadelphia and the three New York City area airports. Although the storm will be long gone by Thursday morning, howling winds in its wake could spell trouble for some of the big balloons at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in New York City. Snow fell in the Appalachians and portions of the interior Northeast. Snow was reported falling as far south as Atlanta. The city picked up 0.4 inch of snow, which was only the third time measurable snow fell there in November since 1930. Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories remained in effect as of late afternoon Wednesday in the central and southern Appalachians, portions of northeast Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania, upstate New York and northern Maine. More lake-effect snow was forecast to fly on Thursday around the Great Lakes. Flood watches also remained in effect for drenched eastern portions of the Northeast. Earlier Wednesday, the weather service confirmed that an EF-2 tornado hit Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, injuring two people. This was the same storm that blitzed the Southwest earlier in the week, killing at least 12 people in traffic accidents. More than 43 million people were expected to travel over the long holiday weekend.

A landslide at an open pit coal mine in north China’s Shanxi Province has claimed lives of at least three people and buried four others.

Rainfall swept across Trinidad for most of yesterday, causing floods in Monkey Town, Barrackpore, Ste Madeleine, Debe, Penal, Otaheite and Cross Crossing.

Two people suffered minor injuries when the roof blew off their condominium in Atlantic Beach along the North Carolina coast in what the National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday as a tornado.

Typhoon Soulik hits Taiwan.

Typhoon Soulik has claimed the life of at least one person and injured 21 others in Taiwan.

All schools and offices in Taiwan were closed today and several airlines including Cathay Pacific and China Airlines have cancelled their flights to Taiwan.

Taiwan authorities are distributing water pumps and sandbags to prevent flooding in low-lying areas.

China Marine Environmental Forecasting Centre has issued a red wave warning over Typhoon Soulik. Typhoon Soulik is expected to create waves up to 9 meters high in the Taiwan Strait, 4 to 6 meters in Zhejiang and Fujian provinces of China.
