USA – Persistent heavy rains soaked the Mississippi River watershed in the first two months of 2020. The result has been bulging rivers from Missouri to the Gulf of Mexico. Near-record flooding has brought two weeks of misery to the states of Mississippi and Tennessee, and high water is expected to arrive next week in New Orleans.

Indonesia – Crop failures could be seen across more than 10,000 hectares of agricultural land in West Java due to the recurring floods that have hit the province over the past few months. West Java Agriculture Agency head Hendy Jatnika said on Friday that heavy rains had inundated 13,234 ha of the province’s 166,715 ha of agricultural land. If the floodwaters did not recede within the next three days, the farmers’ rice crops would be ruined, he went on to say. Agricultural experts have warned that climate change has begun to affect food production in parts of the country, and have urged the government to introduce programs to mitigate the impacts.

Java – Extreme weather incidents are marking the ongoing shift from the rainy season to the dry season in Java, as various parts of the island have been hit with heavy rain and twisters, causing floods, landslides and lots of damage. Twisters lashed several areas in Central Java’s Wonogiri regency this week, collapsing 40 houses and damaging at least 60 others. Besides damaging houses, the tornado also knocked down numerous big trees.

Kenya – Hundreds of thousands of people across Kenya, especially those settled close to Tana River in the northern part, were displaced by heavy floods in the country. According to Red Cross officials, the elderly, women and children are the most affected as their flimsy houses are either swept away or left waist-deep in water. According to a recent flood update by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the floods have displaced more than 211,000 people and reportedly killed 72 people and injured 33 across Kenya since March 2018. OCHA said the floods have disrupted livelihoods, with at least 8,450 acres of farmland submerged in water and more than 6,000 livestock killed. The floods have destroyed houses and damaged infrastructure, such as roads and health facilities, it added.

Somalia – Over 427,000 people have been affected by heavy flooding across Somalia in April. In the Baidoa town alone, about 174,000 people have been affected by flooding. Over half of their existing shelters can’t withstand heavy rains, and many have already been washed away. Many community latrines have been destroyed or filled with flood water. Forecasts predict more heavy rains in the coming week.

Palestine – Two children were found dead in the city of Hevron in Judea, south of Jerusalem on Friday. Floods ravaged much of southern Israel Wednesday and Thursday, forcing closures of roads around the Arava region and parts of the Negev. Eilat Airport was also temporarily closed to air traffic on Thursday due to flooding.

The 6.4 Earthquake rocked the Indonesian capital of Jakarta and other cities on the country’s island of Java late Friday, with authorities reporting at least two deaths.

Disaster relief officials say buildings collapsed in several western Java districts and a hospital was evacuated after suffering damage. The quake made buildings sway in Jakarta.

California, USA – Torrential downpours were inundating Southern California on Friday, flooding streets and prompting water rescues. Officials said at least four people had died in the storm. One was found in a vehicle that was under water. It was snowing heavily at higher elevations. Flash-flood warnings were in effect for Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, the National Weather Service said. Parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties were under a similar watch.

Java, Indonesia – Flooding has struck several areas in Central Java over recent days, displacing thousands of local residents and cutting off access via main roads. For the last two days, the overflowing Pemali, Cisaranggung and Babakan rivers have damaged embankments, causing flooding in several areas, including Brebes, Wanasari, Banjarharjo, Losari and Jatibarang. Flooding struck 10 villages in Brebes regency, forcing 4,930 people to be evacuated from the area.

Java, Indonesia Update – At least 35 people have now reportedly been killed by landslides and floods on Indonesia’s Java island with many others still missing.

Philippines – At least three low-lying villages in the town of Pikit, Cotabato were hit by floodwaters due to torrential rains over the province in the past days. Rivers and irrigation canals in Pikit town overflowed due to continuous rains, which caused flooding in the three villages.

China Update – At least 22 people have been killed and 3.7 million were affected by flooding and landslides in China. The country has been battling heavy rains for the past three days. The ministry of civil affairs said that about 3.7 million people in seven provinces, including Hubei and Sichuan, have been hit by flooding, landslides and mud flows since Saturday. At least 20 people have been reported missing. More than 2,400 homes were damaged and 20,900 hectares of crops were destroyed in the summer rainstorms, which were heavier than usual this year. Eight people were trapped in a flooded coal mine in the southwestern Guizhou Province, state-run Xinhua news agency reported and added that torrential rain is forecast to continue in south China over the next three days.

Java, Indonesia – Flash flooding and landslides in Indonesia have killed 24 and left more than two dozen missing, with mud avalanches burying people inside their homes. Torrential rain since Saturday has triggered serious flooding across Central Java, with thousands of homes inundated. Areas prone to landslides in the densely-populated province were the worst hit, with drivers swept off roads and thousands of homes destroyed by fast-moving walls of mud, rock and water. In one district, five people were buried in their homes as a landslide swept through the village. In another, nine people were killed as they tried to clear rubble from a road.

Thailand – Persistent heavy downpours over the past few days in and around Bangkok had flooded at least 14 raids in the north an east of the city and surrounding areas. Andaman coastal provinces from Ranong to Phangnga, Phuket, Krabi and Trang are braced for downpours until today with high tides rising to at least two metres. One of the worst-hit areas was Nakhon Phanom, where a four-hour downpour flooded some roads in the provincial town up to 50 centimetres.
