Hurricane Matthew – More than three million people have been evacuated from Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina as Hurricane Matthew hits. The biggest storm in a century is set to hit around 26 million people with President Obama declaring a state of emergency and mobilising thousands of National Guard troops. The death toll in the US has risen to 19. Large parts of the east coast have been hit by the hurricane which swept in after devastating Haiti. Roads have been smashed and homes hit by the strong winds – which have started to decrease. Hurricane Matthew has made landfall over McClellanville, South Carolina, where it has caused devastating floods. The eye of the storm, which was downgraded to a category one today, had remained over the sea up until this point. People who experienced the force of the hurricane say that words can’t describe the carnage, they returned to see every tree stripped of all leaves, huge 100 year old oaks are ripped out of the ground. 100’s of trees down, all the small limbs are torn off of trees, the landscape is mauled. Even grass is ripped out of the ground, not a leaf on any of the trees. All the highway signs smashed and all the signs destroyed.

Hurricane Matthew – Emergency teams in Haiti struggled Wednesday to reach hurricane-ravaged areas cut off by washed-out bridges and mudslides after Hurricane Matthew roared over the nation’s western tip to began a devastating island-hopping path that arcs toward the U.S. coast. The full extent of Matthew’s blow to Haiti remained unclear with communications almost fully severed to some regions in the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation — where tens of thousands of people still living in tents after a powerful earthquake six years ago killed 200,000 people. At least 11 deaths — including at least four in neighbouring Dominican Republic — have been blamed on the hurricane, which packed winds of up 145 mph when it hit Haiti on Tuesday and then moved on toward Cuba and the Bahamas. A weakened Matthew was expected to make landfall in Florida on Thursday.

Australia – Another spell of violent weather rolls through the Great Australian Bight, causing widespread disruption. Australia’s wettest spring on record has now developed into the wettest start to October for nearly a century in some areas. The latest spell of heavy rain caused more damage in South Australia on Tuesday, just a week after the entire state suffered a power outage. Floodwaters in the Adelaide Hills damaged homes, while strong winds caused trees to be uprooted. The nation’s capital, Canberra, was also hit: The State Emergency Service issued thunderstorm warnings as a wind gust of 96 kilometres per hour was reported.

MERS emergency meeting held by World Health Organization

A panel of experts at the World Health Organization is debating whether the increase in MERS virus cases in the Arabian Peninsula and its global spread amount to a “public health emergency of international concern” that warrants greater awareness and precautions.

Worldwide, the MERS virus has sickened more than 530, including 145 deaths since September 2012, according to WHO. It was in late March that the 200-cases mark was crossed.

“It’s pretty clear we’re not seeing all of the cases, we’re not hearing about all of the cases and also we’re now seeing seeding from places like Saudi Arabia to other countries,” said Dr. Michael Gardam, director of infection prevention and control at the University Health Network in Toronto.

Symptoms of Middle East respiratory syndrome include cough, fever and sometimes fatal pneumonia. It is caused by the MERS coronavirus, a cousin of the SARS or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus that killed around 800 people worldwide after first appearing in China in 2002. Coronaviruses are also a cause of the common cold.
