Coral transplant – Great Barrier Reef

Coral bred in one part of the Great Barrier Reef was successfully transplanted into another area, Australian scientists said Sunday, in a project they hope could restore damaged ecosystems around the world.

In a trial at the reef’s Heron Island off Australia’s east coast, the researchers collected large amount of coral spawn and eggs late last year, grew them into larvae and then transplanted them into areas of damaged reef.

When they returned eight months later, they found juvenile coral that had survived and grown, aided by underwater mesh tanks. The coral transplant raises hope over the survival of the Barrier Reef.

Finches caught in act of becoming new species

A population of finches on the Galapagos has been discovered in the process of becoming a new species. This is the first example of speciation that scientists have been able to observe directly in the field. Researchers followed the entire population of Darwin’s finches on a tiny Galapagos island called Daphne Major, for many years, and so they were able to watch the speciation in progress.

In 1981, the researchers noticed the arrival of a male of a non-native species, the large cactus finch. They noticed that this male proceeded to mate with a female of one of the local species, a medium ground finch, producing fertile young. Almost 40 years later, the progeny of that original mating are still being observed, and number around 30 individuals.

This new finch population is sufficiently different in form and habits to the native birds, as to be marked out as a new species, and individuals from the different populations don’t interbreed.

Italy – More than 15,000 people are being housed in temporary shelters after the powerful earthquake on Sunday jolted central Italy, a region battered by relentless tremors since August.

Dramatic images from the disaster zone show villages that appear entirely flattened, with historical buildings, including churches, crumbling when the quake struck 10 kilometres below the earth’s surface.

The basilica of San Benedetto had withstood the tests of time since the end of the 14th century.

But on Sunday, the church that paid homage to the patron saint of Europe, Saint Benedict, was reduced to a heap of rubble.

Giant Tortoise Rebounds From Near Extinction

The famed giant tortoise of the Galapagos Islands has been brought back from the verge of extinction after its population dropped to only 15 by the 1960s.

Captive breeding and conservation efforts have allowed that number to rebound to more than 1,000.

“The population is secure. It’s a rare example of how biologists and managers can collaborate to recover a species from the brink of extinction,” said James P. Gibbs, a biologist at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

He was lead author of a study that charted the growing success of the islands tortoises, published in the journal PLOS ONE.

But Gibbs cautions that the giant tortoise population is not likely to increase further on the island of Española until the landscape recovers from the damage inflicted by now-eradicated goats.

After the imported goats devoured all the grassy vegetation and were removed from the island, more shrubs and small trees have grown.

The report says the vegetation hinders both the growth of cactus, which is a vital piece of a tortoise’s diet, and the tortoises’ movement.
