Tropical Storms – Roundup of Tropical Storms:
In the southern hemisphere: Tropical cyclone (tc) 11s (Dumazile), located approximately 353 nm north-northwest of St. Denis, is tracking southwestward at 11 knots.
USA – The powerful storm lashing the northeastern United States on Friday killed at least five people as winds topping 129 km per hour helped flood streets in Boston, ground flights and halt train service across the region. Almost 1.7 million homes and businesses were without power in the Northeast and Midwest as the storm pummelled the East Coast from Virginia to Maine. Government offices in Washington closed as winds gusted to more than 60 mph in the US capital. A flood surge at extreme high tide sent seawater into Boston’s coastal streets, the second time this year that the area had flooded. Wind gusts approaching 70 mph helped force in the water while downing trees and power lines.
England – Flooding has hit parts of southwestern England as Storm Emma lashes the coast with powerful winds and heavy seas, bringing chaos to a region which is already struggling to cope after two days of blizzards and sub-zero temperatures. Dawlish railway station near Teignmouth in South Devon has been engulfed by hides tides whipped up by Storm Emma and there has also been flooding in seafront areas of Paignton and Torquay which residents said were “under a foot of water”. Flood warnings have been issued for the whole of south Cornwall coast from Land’s End to Lizard Point and Mount’s Bay and remain in force.
