UK – Heavy rain causing floods continues to hit the UK. The Met Office has warned there is a danger some towns may become cut off today after parts of the country were drenched in two inches of rain. An amber warning was put in place for an area centred around Norwich which covers parts of Norfolk and Suffolk. It said homes and businesses are likely to be flooded with damage to some buildings and adds there is “a good chance some communities are cut off by flooded roads”. It also warned of a “danger to life” due to deep or fast flowing floodwater and says power cuts are possible and driving conditions could become “difficult”. A yellow warning stretching between just north of Essex to north Lincolnshire has also in place since 8am this morning and last until 5pm tonight.

UK – The remnants of Hurricane Lorenzo are bringing gale-force winds that are thrashing the west coast as rain sweeps across much of the country. The Environment Agency has issued 28 flood alerts and eight flood warnings across the country as half a month’s rain is set to fall on the already saturated ground by the end of the week.

Cambodia – Since early September, Cambodia has experienced flooding along the Mekong River Basin and around the Tonle Sap Lake, which was triggered by heavy rainfall. 238 communes in 62 districts in 10 provinces have been affected. Current reports indicate that flood waters from the Mekong River have receded in many affected areas, though flash floods have affected areas around the Tonle Sap Lake. 93,319 households affected, 11,579 households displaced and 16 persons have died.

Chicago, USA – Heavy rain overnight has left many roads across the Chicago area flooded. Flash flooding was also an issue in Skokie. A number of residential streets were underwater, but water is now receding throughout the area.

UK – More rain and winds are expected in parts of the country later this week as the remnants of Hurricane Lorenzo arrive in the UK. The storm – the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the far east Atlantic – will have lost most of its power by the time it arrives on Thursday. It comes after torrential rain brought flash flooding and led to some places being evacuated on Tuesday. On the Isle of Man a major incident was declared with people trapped in their homes indoors. Elsewhere, some areas in the Midlands, Wales and southern England were hit by a week’s rain in just an hour, as thunderstorms swept across the UK. Roads and railways were closed and some flights from London’s Heathrow Airport were delayed on Tuesday evening due to the bad weather. Dozens of flood warnings and alerts remain in place across England.

India – More than 100 people have been killed over the last four days after a heavy spell of retreating monsoon rains flooded wide areas in northeast India’s Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar states. Patna has received more than 200mm of rain since Friday, according to the weather department. Days of downpour left almost 80 percent of Patna localities, including hospitals and schools, flooded. Residents reported knee-deep water across the city.

UK – Cars have been submerged and villages and towns devastated by surging floodwater that followed torrential downpours this weekend. Britain is braced for several days of “persistent” rain and the tail-end of record-breaking Hurricane Lorenzo is set to bring gale force winds later in the week. The 600-mile-wide hurricane became the strongest this far east in the Atlantic region overnight bringing winds of up to 160mph.

UK – Heavy rain across parts of Wales and England, including Manchester, Cardiff, Lancashire and Leeds, has caused chaos forcing residents to flee their homes and severe travel disruption resulting from mudslides on train tracks.

Turkey – Heavy rains hit northwestern Turkey on Saturday, blocking roads in Artvin province of the Black Sea region, according to local media. Streams overflowed in the Borcka district of Artvin, some villages and neighborhood roads were closed due to landslides. The rains also flooded the lower floors of some buildings.

Niger – U.N. agencies are rushing to provide aid to tens of thousands of people affected by severe flooding in Niger. Floods caused by heavy rains, which began in June, have killed 57 people and affected 211,000.

India – A heavy spell of retreating monsoon rains has flooded wide areas of northern India, killing dozens of people this past week, an official said Saturday. Most of the 59 fatalities were caused by house collapses, lightning and drowning in Uttar Pradesh state. They included at least five people dying of snake bites in flooded areas. The temple city of Varanasi was lashed by 19 centimeters (7 inches) of rain on Thursday and Friday, flooding the bathing areas of the Ganges River used by thousands of Hindu pilgrims. Schools were shut on Saturday as the downpour caused disruptions in the state capital, Lucknow, and several towns, including Amethi and Hardoi.

Sri Lanka – Earlier this week reports were received that one person had died and more than 45,000 people had been affected by heavy monsoon rains in the southern and western provinces in the country. A spokesman from Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Centre told the publication: “We have issued landslide warnings in certain areas, because this rain and volume at this time is unexpected.” On Wednesday, the Disaster Management Centre said 80,000 people across the region have now been affected by heavy rains and strong winds with reports that more than 14,000 people had been evacuated to safer locations.

India – At least 11 people have been killed and six are missing after the Western Indian city of Pune and its neighboring areas were hit by heavy rain and flash floods. More than 28,000 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas and the local administration is on alert for more rain. Pune, which is around 200 kilometers (124 miles) east of India’s financial hub of Mumbai, has received 113% more rainfall than average since the start of the monsoon season in early June.

England – Major London train stations were closed yesterday as a result of flooding, including Moorgate, St Pauls, Victoria and London Liverpool Street. Yesterday saw a month’s worth of rain dumped in some areas of the UK in as little as six hours, with bad weather expected to continue today. Commuters suffered evening rush hour misery as four central London stations were hit by flooding following huge downpours in the capital on Tuesday. Liverpool Street station saw the worst of the chaos, with the rain forcing numerous rail services to be delayed and cancelled. Meanwhile, Tube routes were also closed. Water at the station was said to be ankle deep in some parts of the concourse, with Network Rail adding: “An overflowing storm drain on the roof meant excess water came onto the tracks causing multiple track circuit and signal failures. Meanwhile, at Victoria station – the second busiest in the UK – trains on
the District and Circle lines were not stopping.
