Global Warming

Germany – Drought

In Germany, a hot, dry summer has left water levels at near historic lows, and that problem is rippling across the entire economy. Scientists are blaming the effects of climate change for the extreme weather events causing the drought.

Declining shellfish – East Coast USA

Valuable species of shellfish have become harder to find on the East Coast because of degraded habitats caused by a warming environment, according to a pair of scientists that sought to find out whether environmental factors or overfishing was the source of the decline.

Wildfires – California, USA

As relatives desperately searched shelters for missing loved ones on Sunday, crews searching the smoking ruins of Paradise and outlying areas found six more bodies, raising the death toll to 29 in the town, matching the deadliest wildfire in California history. 228 people were still unaccounted for. Ten search and recovery teams were working in Paradise — a town of 27,000 that was largely incinerated on Thursday.

Wildfires continued to rage on both ends of the state, with gusty winds expected overnight which will challenge firefighters. The statewide death toll stood at 31. The Camp Fire that ravaged a swath of Northern California was the deadliest. More than 200,000 people have been evacuated and there are warnings more homes could be destroyed.

Drought, warmer weather attributed to climate change, and the building of homes deeper into forests have led to longer and more destructive wildfire seasons in California. While California officially emerged from a five-year drought last year, much of the northern two-thirds of the state is abnormally dry.

African swine fever found in animal feed – China

Major Chinese animal feed maker Tangrenshen Group reported on Sunday that feed produced by one of its units had been contaminated with African swine fever, raising fears of its spread further across the country.

This is the first reported contamination of feed supplies in China and increases the concerns for pig farmers trying to avoid the disease. It also raises the economic pressure on feed manufacturers already struggling with low margins and slowing demand.

Ebola – DR Congo

As the official death toll reaches 200, authorities are describing the current ebola outbreak in the DR Congo as the worst in its history, since the disease was identified in 1976.
