NewsBytes:

Jordan – At least 11 people, including a young girl, were killed as flash floods engulfed multiple cities in Jordan on Friday. Heavy downpours triggered the flash floods, forcing more than 3,500 international and domestic tourists to be evacuated from the tourist city of Petra in southern Jordan. Ongoing rainfall in the Daba’a region of southern Jordan also led to the closure of the desert highway in both directions. A large number of vehicles were left stranded as the highway flooded and traffic trapped those attempting to leave.

Wales – Flooding has continued to hit parts of Wales for a second day causing widespread travel disruption. There are amber and yellow warnings in place for wind and rain, with Pembrokeshire set to be worst hit by the severe weather. The M48 Severn Bridge has also been shut eastbound due to strong winds. Flooding has also blocked the railway line between Milford Haven and Haverfordwest which is expected to cause disruption until early Saturday.

Wildfires

Wildfires – California, USA

Billowing smoke and raging flames spread across California as wildfires in both northern and southern parts of the state injured people, forced evacuations and engulfed houses.

The Camp Fire has scorched over 28 square miles in Butte County, which is about 90 miles north of Sacramento, according to Cal Fire. Fire officials said some structures have been destroyed in addition to injuries.

In Southern California, the Hill Fire broke out Thursday afternoon and grew to 8,000 to 10,000 acres while jumping a major highway. Six people have been reported to have died, with at least 150 structures destroyed. Thousands of people have fled the flames.

Space Events

Asteroids

Three chunky asteroids will zoom by Earth this weekend, and one of them is getting closer to our planet than the moon itself.

On Saturday (Nov. 10), the near-Earth asteroid 2018 VX1 will zip within about 236,100 miles (380,000 kilometers) of Earth. That’s closer than the moon, which orbits at about 238,900 miles (384,400 km) away from the Earth. While this space rock encounter is close, it won’t pose any danger to Earth.

The other two asteroids won’t venture as close to Earth, but have still grabbed the attention of scientists. These include asteroid 2018 VS1, which will pass about 861,700 miles (1.38 million km) away from Earth — almost four times as far away from the Earth as the moon.
