India – In Uttar Pradesh, heavy rains caused the Ganga to flood and inundate Kanpur, Hapur, Varanasi and Baliya. The floods marooned 153 villages and 805 villages were affected by the floods. Over 2,000 houses and huts were damaged or submerged, and over 1.12 lakh hectares of land were affected. In Varanasi, connectivity between 84 ghats were also affected. Low-lying areas are under water, and boating has temporarily been banned in the region, with authorities issuing a warning. The Central Water Commission said all major rivers are flowing in spate. The Ganga, Ram Ganga, Sharda, Ghaghra and Quano are currently flowing above the danger mark at different places. Rains and floods have affected 23 districts in Uttar Pradesh. Six more people died in rain-related incidents since Thursday night, taking the toll to 82 since 1 September, officials said on Friday.

Texas, USA – A mother and her 2-year-old daughter drowned Saturday after their car was swept off the road and into a culvert that filled with floodwaters. Rescuers also found another man who drowned at 2:30 p.m. when his vehicle became submerged.


Omnivorous Shark Discovered

Ruining the reputation of sharks as bloodthirsty predators, California researchers said they have found a shark that enjoys a side of seagrass with its prey.

Bonnethead sharks not only eat grass while chomping fish and squid – they also digest the plant and gain nutrition from it, scientists at the University of California, Irvine announced.

It turns out bonnetheads have high levels of enzymes that break down fiber and carbohydrates, compared with the low amount carnivores typically have. That makes the bonnethead the first known omnivorous shark, researchers said.



Wildfires – Oregon, USA

The Tepee Fire grew to 1,592 acres Friday night, fueled by strong winds. A fire line was established around 60 percent of the blaze, mostly on the western side..

The Willow Fire is estimated at 300 acres, burning south of Pelton Dam and Willow Canyon, about six miles northwest of Madras. Air tankers and a heavy helicopter have been assisting firefighters on the ground. The Willow Fire is now 20 percent contained.

Wildfires – Montana, USA

The Boundary wildfire burning in Montana’s Glacier National Park spilled over into Canada on Friday. Dry and windy conditions flared up fire activity on the blaze at about 3 p.m.

The wildfire then jumped the border into Alberta, burning most of the basin on the southwest-facing slope of Mount Richards and the south- and east-facing slopes of Mount Alderson. The entire wildfire, now burning in the Boundary Creek Valley, Glacier National Park and Water Lakes National Park, is estimated to be 1,100 hectares in size and is considered “out of control.”


Ebola – DR Congo

According to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Ministry of Health’s (MoH) update on the North Kivu Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), the number of confirmed outbreak cases has now reached 100. In addition, there are another 31 probable cases are reported. Of the 100 confirmed, 58 died, 35 are cured and 7 are hospitalized.

First Monkeypox Case in UK

UK health officials have claimed that monkeypox, a virus similar to human smallpox that is endemic in Central and Western Africa, has been found in an individual traveling from Nigeria to Britain.

The first ever case of monkeypox was recorded in the United Kingdom, after the rare viral infection was discovered in a Nigerian citizen staying at a naval base in Cornwall, Public Health England announced.
