Isle de Jean Charles, a small island in southeastern Louisiana’s bayous, is drowning as the Gulf of Mexico rises. Twenty-nine homes remain, housing 100 people, but they are all being relocated because the flooding is unstoppable. The island has already lost 98% of its land since 1955, making it one of the most visible victims of climate change — so far. The residents can either leave their homes or die in them, and they are leaving.
Climate change is affecting larger coastal areas in the U.S., from Alaska down to Florida and Louisiana. Climate-induced migration is now a concrete reality for US citizens, not an abstract idea for politicians to talk about.
Wildfires – Colorado, USA
Oil and gas companies temporarily shut down wells in northwestern Colorado on Sunday as three wildfires ignited by lightning burned across more than 750 acres, mostly federally managed Bureau of Land Management public land.
The 637-acre Hunter wildfire, 20 miles southwest of Meeker, was growing even as 60 firefighters with aerial support attacked flames. The temperatures, nearly 90 degrees, and dry wind favored the fire.
A 65-acre Temple wildfire, 25 miles west of Craig, and the 55-acre Cross fire, 35 miles west of Craig, occupied another 40 firefighters.
Wildfires – Arizona, USA
A wildfire burning two miles southeast of Dragoon in Cochise County has grown to 10,500 acres with no containment, officials said.
The Lizard Fire merged with the Dragoon Fire Friday afternoon and a Type-1 Incident Management Team was brought in to assume command of the blaze, according to an update from the U.S. Forest Service.
Approximately 350 personnel were assigned to the fire, including dozens of engines, a hotshot crew, water tankers and a helicopter. The blaze, which is burning tall grass and brush, was started by lightning Wednesday.
